More Portraiture & Lighting Techniques

These were taken at a recent event and feature a few techniques that some may wish to explore.  The 1st two images I used an umbrella with 2x flashes as key light and a bare flash directly behind the model which gives a hard rim light and also illuminates the rain.

The ambient light here was very poor so the background required F2.8 @ 1/10 shutter speed meaning that it would be impossible to hand hold with a 135mm lens attached; I could have cranked up the iso but I decided on a different technique

I ensured that the model was under the shade of a bridge and again using the umbrella as key light and and this tims the bare flash as fill.in a 2:1 (approx) power ratio.  The flash has frozen the models despite the 1/10 shutter speed, the wide aperture has ensured that only the model is in focus whilst also hiding any motion blur.

This is a more of a typical setup with 1 bare strobe as key and another bare strob 2 stops below for a higher contrast effect.  I desaturated slightly and used a strong sepia filter.

  1. Nice post, I hadn't considered the wide aperture as a technique to hide hand shake.
